The British tennis star, who has been plagued by a series of health issues, struggled through her opening match at the Ningbo Open against China's Zhu Lin, ultimately losing 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Raducanu's health woes resurfaced during the match, requiring medical attention on court. Medical staff, including a physician and physiotherapist, rushed to her aid during the second set after she successfully broke Zhu's serve. The medical team assessed her vital signs, including her pulse and blood pressure. Despite the intervention, Raducanu appeared to be struggling physically, holding her lower back area repeatedly during the final set. She also requested another medical timeout to address back-related issues.
The 22-year-old's struggles in Ningbo follow her withdrawal from the Wuhan Open a week earlier due to dizziness. In Wuhan, medical staff examined her pupils, heart rate, temperature and blood pressure during a match against Ann Li, but she was ultimately forced to retire. The challenging environmental conditions in China, including high temperatures and humidity, have proven difficult for many players.
Raducanu's recent setbacks have raised concerns about her upcoming schedule, including the Hong Kong Open. Just last year, Raducanu had to withdraw from the Hong Kong Open due to a foot injury. She had sprained ligaments in her foot during the quarterfinal of the Korea Open in September of that year, forcing her to miss several tournaments. In a statement released at the time, Raducanu said she was sorry to miss the event and needed more time to be match fit.
Following her loss in Ningbo, Raducanu's season record now stands at 28-22. She has lost five of her last seven matches and has gone 2-4 during the Asian swing of the WTA Tour.
