The legal battle surrounding the inheritance of the late businessman Sunjay Kapur has intensified, with allegations of forgery and manipulation flying between his children from his marriage to actress Karisma Kapoor, and his widow, Priya Sachdev Kapur. Sunjay Kapur, who passed away in London in June of this year due to a heart attack, was the chairman of Sona Comstar, a leading automotive component manufacturer.
Samaira and Kiaan Kapur, Sunjay's children with Karisma Kapoor, have accused their stepmother, Priya Sachdev, of forging their father's will to exclude them from a significant portion of his estimated ₹30,000 crore estate. The dispute reached the Delhi High Court, where the children's legal representatives have argued that the will contains "glaring errors" and "blunders," suggesting it is not a document that Sunjay Kapur prepared, read, or made.
Senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, representing Samaira and Kiaan, pointed out inconsistencies such as the misspelling of Kiaan's name and an incorrect address for Samaira, arguing that these errors are uncharacteristic of Sunjay Kapur, who shared a close relationship with his children. Jethmalani stated, "This will demeans the late Sunjay Kapur. It is so casual". He further contended that the will lacks details of various assets, including jewelry and crypto assets.
The lawyer also highlighted that there was no evidence of anyone other than Priya Sachdev preparing the will. "This can only be done by the beneficiary of the will to prevent any challenges. Only one person was given the benefits. If this will is a forgery, then only one person could have forged it," he argued.
In response to these allegations, Priya Sachdev's lawyer has claimed that Karisma Kapoor's children were aware of Sunjay Kapur's will. The lawyer has termed the challenge to the will as a "bogus challenge".
Karisma Kapoor, though not a plaintiff in the case, is representing her children in the proceedings. The court has allowed Priya Sachdev to file a list of Sunjay Kapur's assets in a sealed cover, with copies provided to the petitioners.
Amidst the legal battle, Priya Sachdev posted an emotional tribute to Sunjay Kapur on his birth anniversary, quoting verses from the Bhagavad Gita and sharing personal memories. The post included photos and videos of Sunjay with his children from his marriage to Karisma, though Karisma herself was absent from the tribute.
The legal proceedings are ongoing, with the Delhi High Court continuing to hear the matter. The outcome of this case will determine the distribution of Sunjay Kapur's vast estate and resolve the serious allegations of forgery and manipulation that have been brought forth.
