On October 14, 2025, the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom conducted a joint aerial exercise over the Indian Ocean Region, reaffirming their commitment to regional stability and strengthening defense cooperation. The exercise involved a range of frontline platforms from both nations, enhancing interoperability and mutual trust.
The IAF deployed Sukhoi-30 MKIs, Jaguar fighter aircraft, Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS), and Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft for the coordinated mission. The Royal Navy contributed F-35B fighter jets operating from HMS Prince of Wales.
The IAF shared details of the exercise on X, stating that the training strengthened interoperability, mutual trust, and a collective commitment to regional stability. The joint training reflects India's growing defense partnerships with allied navies and air forces and underscores the strategic importance of multi-domain exercises in the Indo-Pacific region. The exercise included air combat drills, surveillance operations, and integrated fleet coordination, demonstrating the IAF's ability to operate with advanced foreign platforms in a complex maritime environment.
This joint air combat exercise follows the KONKAN 25 bilateral naval exercise, further highlighting the growing military cooperation between India and the UK. During KONKAN 25, Indian MiG-29K and UK F-35B jets executed aerial maneuvers, a flypast, and a photoshoot. Joint operations also featured a submarine hunt where an Indian submarine attempted to evade detection by British warships and Merlin Mk2 helicopters operating from HMS Prince of Wales and frigate HMS Richmond.
In a related development, Indian defense officials have confirmed that the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is preparing to extend the range of its Astra Mark 2 air-to-air missile to over 200 kilometers. This upgrade from the earlier planned range of around 160 kilometers signifies a major boost to India's air combat capabilities. The Indian Air Force is also set to acquire approximately 700 Astra Mark 2 missiles for its Sukhoi and Light Combat Aircraft fighter jet fleets.
