Moscow, Russia – In a move set to reshape the landscape of international fruit trade, Russia is preparing to significantly increase its banana imports from India. The Russian agricultural oversight body, Rosselkhoznadzor, announced plans on Wednesday to import between 300,000 and 500,000 metric tons of bananas annually from India.
This development follows discussions between Sergei Dankvert, head of Rosselkhoznadzor, and representatives from the Indian Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, as well as the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The talks centered on enhancing mutual supplies of agricultural products, including shrimp and fish from India to Russia, and expanding access for other Indian fruits and vegetables to the Russian market.
Rosselkhoznadzor expressed interest in diversifying its banana supply sources, noting India's position as the world's largest banana producer, with an annual output of 33 million tons. While India is the world's largest producer of bananas, its export share in the global market is only 1%. In fiscal year 2022-2023, India exported bananas worth $176 million, or 0.36 million metric tons.
The decision to boost banana imports from India comes amidst evolving geopolitical dynamics. Earlier this year, Russia's trade relations with Ecuador, a major banana supplier, faced tensions. This led Russia to seek alternative sources for its banana imports, with India emerging as a key partner.
In February 2024, India already made its first shipment of bananas to Russia. According to Rosselkhoznadzor, the volume of this initial shipment was around 3,000 tonnes, signaling a growing demand for Indian bananas in Russia. By February 17, 2024, India had exported 20 metric tons (1540 cartons) of bananas to Russia.
This development is mutually beneficial for both nations. Russia gains a reliable partner to meet its fruit import needs, while India, the world's largest banana producer, can diversify its export destinations.
The increased trade in bananas also aligns with broader efforts to strengthen economic ties between Russia and India. Trade between the two countries has deepened, particularly since 2022.
Looking ahead, technical consultations between competent authorities from both countries are scheduled to continue to address phytosanitary issues, including requirements for banana exports. These ongoing discussions aim to ensure smooth and efficient trade processes.
