Crackdown on RSS March Sparks Tension in Priyank Kharge's Constituency: A Pre-March Security Clampdown.

Tensions are escalating in Chittapur, the constituency of Karnataka's Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, IT, and BT, Priyank Kharge, ahead of a planned Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) march scheduled for October 19. The political climate has become charged following the state government's move to potentially restrict RSS activities in public spaces, a decision that has sparked both support and strong opposition.

Priyank Kharge, a three-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Chittapur and son of Indian National Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, recently urged the Chief Minister to impose restrictions on RSS activities in government and public areas. This prompted a sharp response from BJP leaders, who have vowed to continue organizing RSS events and dared the government to take action. R. Ashoka, Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly, and BJP MLA S.R. Vishwanath have publicly challenged the government's order. Vishwanath has even encouraged party members to use the RSS anthem as their mobile ringtone in a symbolic act of defiance.

In response to the BJP's stance, Kharge stated that legal action would be taken against any organization that violates the established rules and regulations for holding events in public spaces. He emphasized that prior permission is mandatory for any event held in public spaces, including parks, government schools, and grounds. Kharge has also suggested that BJP leaders encourage their children to participate in the RSS march in uniform, sarcastically welcoming them to do so.

The RSS march in Chittapur is expected to draw a large crowd, with estimates suggesting between 600 and 800 participants. The march is planned to cover approximately 3 kilometers, commencing and concluding at the Bajaj Kalyana Mantapa. RSS leaders have stated that the march was planned well in advance and is not related to Kharge's recent remarks. Ashok Patil, an RSS leader, mentioned that the organization has applied for permission from the taluk administration and has paid the necessary fees to the Chittapur Town Municipal Council for installing banners and flags.

Adding to the heightened atmosphere, officials have reportedly removed saffron flags and banners erected across Chittapur in preparation for the RSS march, citing a lack of permission. The RSS claims to have applied for the necessary police approval and paid advertisement tax to the municipality.

The Congress party has organized protests in various districts in support of Kharge and the government's decision to regulate public events. Meanwhile, the BJP accuses Kharge of targeting them for political reasons, alleging that they frequently visit Kalaburagi district not to address public issues but to protest against him. Kharge refuted these claims, stating that while he does not oppose peaceful events, organizers must adhere to legal procedures.

The state government has clarified that public properties are intended for the rightful use of citizens and cannot be occupied or obstructed without permission. They have observed that several organizations are using public properties without prior permission for activities, propaganda, or training, which constitutes trespass and poses risks to public safety. The new regulations will require organizations to obtain permission from competent authorities, who will assess the nature of the event and its potential impact on public convenience, safety, and institutional integrity. The march is also scheduled to occur in Sedam on the same day.

The situation remains tense as the RSS prepares to hold its march, and all eyes are on the authorities to see whether permission will be granted and how the event will unfold.
