Jack Hughes' Two Goals Propel Devils to Victory: Oilers Fall 5-3 in Intense Matchup

NEWARK, N.J. -- Jack Hughes scored twice to lead the New Jersey Devils to a 5-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday. The Devils' win marks their fourth consecutive victory, a feat they haven't accomplished since January 7-16, 2023.

Hughes's pair of goals came in the second and third periods, showcasing his offensive talent. His first goal was scored eight minutes into the second period, where he maneuvered through three Oilers defenders and beat goaltender Calvin Pickard. With seven and a half minutes left in the game, Hughes scored again, further extending the Devils' lead. Overall, Hughes has three goals this season.

Jake Allen was solid in net for the Devils, stopping 27 of the 30 shots he faced. Allen's performance was crucial, especially early in the game when the Oilers were applying heavy pressure.

Jesper Bratt contributed a power-play goal, assisted by Hughes and Nico Hischier, four seconds after a face-off. Connor Brown, a former Oiler, scored a shorthanded goal, capitalizing on a mistake by Evan Bouchard. Dawson Mercer scored late in the third to seal the victory.

The Oilers' Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored twice, and Curtis Lazar, formerly of the Devils, added another goal with just 1.7 seconds remaining in the game. Despite their efforts, the Oilers couldn't overcome the Devils' strong performance and Allen’s goaltending.

The first period was scoreless, with the Oilers initially dominating in shots. Edmonton had the first power play opportunity but could not convert. The Devils picked up momentum as the period progressed, eventually drawing a power play of their own.

Devils coach Sheldon Keefe acknowledged the team's growth and maturity since last season.

The Devils will visit Toronto on Tuesday night. The Oilers will visit Detroit on Sunday.
