Sanjay Manjrekar recounts 1989-90 Pakistan tour scuffle sparked by anti-India slogans in Karachi.

During India's tour of Pakistan in 1989-90, former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar experienced firsthand the tense atmosphere that prevailed during that time, particularly in Karachi. Manjrekar recalls an incident during the first Test in Karachi where a spectator stormed the pitch and engaged in anti-India slogans.

Manjrekar, who was making his debut in the series, recounted that the man, dressed in a grey Pathani suit, walked past him while he was fielding at mid-on and began muttering about "Kashmir" and "you Indians". The intruder then made his way to the pitch and started shouting anti-India slogans, expressing that the Indian team shouldn't have toured Pakistan.

The situation escalated when the man targeted the Indian captain, Krishnamachari Srikkanth, grabbing his shirt and ripping it. According to Manjrekar, this act led to a "full-blown scuffle". The umpires' attempts to intervene proved futile as the events unfolded. The incident disrupted the match and highlighted the heightened tensions between the two nations at the time. The match was eventually called off due to the security concerns.

The 1989-90 tour of Pakistan, which marked the international debut of Sachin Tendulkar, occurred against a backdrop of escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, fueled by a surge in terrorism in Kashmir. This political climate added another layer of complexity to the tour, making it a challenging experience for the Indian team.

Despite the off-field disturbances, Manjrekar had a successful tour, emerging as the highest run-scorer from both teams in the Test series. He scored his second Test century in November 1989 and made his highest score in Test cricket, reaching 218 runs in the third Test.

The incident in Karachi was not an isolated one, as another match during the tour had to be stopped because of unruly Pakistani fans. These events reflect the difficult relationship between the two countries and the impact it can have on sporting events.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has often considered the security situation when deciding whether to send the Indian cricket team to Pakistan. Team India has not played in Pakistan since the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.
