India-Bangladesh Women's Cricket Series Delayed Following Death Sentence in Bangladesh; Political Tension Cited as Factor

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has postponed the Indian women's cricket team's home series against Bangladesh, initially scheduled for December. This decision comes amidst escalating political tensions between the two nations, with some sources believing it to be a contributing factor to the rescheduling.

The series was to include three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) as part of the ICC Future Tours Programme. Kolkata and Cuttack were the proposed venues for the matches. The BCCI is currently working to arrange an alternate assignment for the Indian team in December.

The postponement coincides with a recent ruling by a tribunal court in Bangladesh sentencing former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death for alleged crimes against humanity. Hasina has been sentenced in absentia, as she is currently in India after fleeing Bangladesh in August 2024. The interim government in Dhaka has requested that India hand over Hasina.

According to reports, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has received a letter from the BCCI regarding the postponement and is awaiting further details. A BCCI source stated that they didn't get the go-ahead for the series. While the BCCI has not officially stated the reason for the postponement, the tense diplomatic relations between India and Bangladesh are widely believed to be a factor.

The series against Bangladesh was expected to be the Indian team's first international engagement since winning the ICC ODI World Cup earlier this month. It was also set to mark the beginning of a new cycle in the Women's ODI Championship for both teams.

Earlier this year, the BCCI also postponed the men's white-ball tour of Bangladesh, initially slated for August 2025, to September 2026. This decision was made following unrest that led to the fall of the Hasina-led government.

Following the Women's Premier League (WPL), the Indian team is scheduled to tour Australia for an all-format series. The BCCI is now focused on finding a new opponent for the Indian women's team in December.

Sheikh Hasina's death sentence stems from a trial where she was found guilty of ordering a deadly crackdown on a student-led uprising last year. The International Crimes Tribunal in Dhaka delivered the verdict, with Hasina receiving a life sentence for crimes against humanity and a death sentence for the killings during the uprising. The United Nations reported that up to 1,400 people may have been killed during the protests in July and August 2024, with thousands more injured.
