Asaduddin Owaisi, the chief of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and a Member of Parliament, has strongly condemned recent remarks made by Pakistani politician Bilawal Bhutto Zardari concerning the Indus Waters Treaty. Bhutto's statement, delivered in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, asserted Pakistan's rights over the Indus River, declaring, "either our water will flow through it, or their blood."
Owaisi responded sharply, dismissing Bhutto's comments as "childish talk." He reminded the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader of the tragic assassination of his mother, Benazir Bhutto, highlighting that she was killed by terrorists within Pakistan. "When they shot your mother, it is terrorism. And when they kill our mothers and daughters, it is not?" Owaisi questioned, emphasizing the hypocrisy of Bhutto's stance.
The Pahalgam terror attack, which resulted in the deaths of 25 tourists and a Kashmiri individual, prompted India to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, a move that triggered Bhutto's inflammatory response. Owaisi, however, directed Bhutto to focus on the internal issues plaguing Pakistan, including the pervasive threat of terrorism. He went further by saying "Does he even know what he is saying? Unless the US gives you something, you cannot run the country and you are trying to stare us down."
Owaisi didn't hold back in his criticism of Pakistan, accusing the country of being worse than the Khawarij, an Islamic sect considered deviant, and labeling them as ISIS sympathizers. He referenced the targeting of individuals based on their religion during attacks, stating, "The way you attacked our country, the way people were asked their religion and shot, what religion are you talking about? You are worse than Khawarij (an Islamic sect considered deviant). You are ISIS sympathisers."
Other Indian political figures have also voiced their disapproval of Bilawal Bhutto's remarks. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri urged Bhutto to get his "mental condition checked," while Congress MP Shashi Tharoor described the remarks as "inflammatory."
Owaisi also addressed the threats of nuclear retaliation often issued by Pakistani leaders, cautioning them against such rhetoric. He asserted that Pakistan lags far behind India in both military and economic strength. "They are not half-an-hour, but half-a-century behind India. Our military budget is bigger than your national budget," Owaisi stated. He also added, "Pakistani leaders should not threaten India of a nuclear war. They should remember that if they kill innocent people in another country, no one will remain silent."
The AIMIM chief also appealed to the public to maintain unity and not allow divisive forces to succeed. He also said that Pakistan’s ISI and ISIS want to instigate fights between Hindus and Muslims.
