In light of escalating tensions and heightened security concerns, the central government has reportedly identified 17 districts in West Bengal as sensitive ahead of a nationwide security drill scheduled for May 7, 2025. This directive is part of a larger initiative to bolster civil defense mechanisms across the country following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has directed all states and Union Territories to conduct these mock drills to assess and enhance their preparedness against potential threats. These drills aim to evaluate the effectiveness of air raid warning systems and prepare civilians for possible attacks. The last time a similar exercise of this scale was conducted was in 1971, during the lead-up to the India-Pakistan war.

These 17 districts are likely categorized based on their vulnerability to attacks and the presence of vital installations. These installations may include power plants, military-linked infrastructure, and key government buildings. While the specific districts have not been officially named, West Bengal has the highest number of Civil Defence Districts (32) in the country.

The mock drills will simulate real-world emergency scenarios. Key activities will include the testing of air-raid sirens, implementation of blackout measures, and training of civilians, including students, on safety protocols to follow during an aerial or ground assault. Mock drills will also focus on training civilians to effectively respond in the event of a hostile attack. Citizens will be educated on how to react to air raid sirens, what actions to take during blackouts, and how to ensure they have access to essential supplies. The goal is to minimize panic, prevent chaos, and save lives.

Citizens are advised to remain calm and follow local instructions during the drill. They should ensure they have basic supplies such as water, medicines, and flashlights readily available. It is also crucial to avoid spreading rumors or unverified information on social media and to listen to official updates from radio or government channels.

The central government's emphasis on these security drills underscores the importance of preparedness and public awareness in the face of evolving security challenges. By conducting these exercises, authorities aim to strengthen civil defense mechanisms and ensure the safety and security of citizens across the nation.
