Donald Trump has once again claimed that he stopped a war between India and Pakistan. The former US President, while meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, asserted that he had ended six wars, including the one between India and Pakistan.
Trump's recent remarks echo similar claims he has made repeatedly since May 10, 2025, when he initially announced on social media that India and Pakistan had agreed to a "full and immediate" ceasefire after what he described as a "long night" of talks mediated by Washington. Since then, he has repeated the claim over 40 times, stating that he "helped settle" tensions between the two countries. In August 2025, Trump stated that five or six planes "got shot down" during the conflict between India and Pakistan. He also added that the conflict could have turned into a "nuclear conflict". Trump has also said that he used trade as leverage to get India and Pakistan to stop fighting. He said he told them, "You can fight your hearts out, but no trade," and that "all of a sudden, no more war".
However, India has consistently denied Trump's claims of mediation. According to India, the understanding on the cessation of hostilities with Pakistan was reached following direct talks between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of the two countries. Furthermore, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stated in Parliament that no leader of any country asked India to stop Operation Sindoor. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has also categorically stated that there was no third-party intervention in bringing about the ceasefire with Pakistan during Operation Sindoor. He clarified that the decision to halt military action was entirely India's and was not linked to trade, as claimed by Trump. Jaishankar also noted that there was no phone call between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump between April 22nd and June 16th, the critical period during which the conflict reportedly de-escalated.
Despite India's repeated denials, Trump has continued to include the alleged resolution of tensions between India and Pakistan among his foreign policy achievements. He has also listed other global conflicts that he claims to have helped settle, including those between Congo and Rwanda, Thailand and Cambodia, and Serbia and Kosovo. Trump has even suggested that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts.
