A tour bus accident on Interstate 90 in Pembroke, New York, approximately 25 miles east of Buffalo, has resulted in five fatalities and numerous injuries. The incident occurred on Friday, August 22, 2025, at approximately 12:30 p.m. when the bus, carrying 54 passengers, crashed and rolled over. The bus was en route to New York City from Niagara Falls.
According to state police, the driver of the bus apparently became distracted, lost control, and overcorrected, causing the vehicle to veer onto the right shoulder and flip over. The cause of the driver's distraction is currently under investigation. A preliminary investigation has ruled out mechanical failure or driver impairment as contributing factors. The driver, who survived the crash, is cooperating with the authorities.
Passengers on the bus ranged in age from 1 to 74. Many passengers were ejected from the bus as the windows shattered, while others became trapped inside. Emergency responders, including multiple ambulances and medical helicopters, were dispatched to the scene to rescue and transport the injured. Victims were taken to regional hospitals, including Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester and Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo. Injuries ranged from head trauma to broken arms and legs.
State police reported that the majority of the passengers were of Indian, Chinese, and Filipino ethnicity. Translators were brought to the scene to assist with communication.
The New York State Thruway (I-90) was shut down in both directions near the site of the crash, causing significant traffic delays. New York Governor Kathy Hochul has been briefed on the accident and her office is working with police and local officials.
"An absolute tragedy took place,” said State Police Major Andre Ray. "And first and foremost, our thoughts, prayers and hearts go out to those involved, their friends and their families".
