Ex-India Star Weighs Human Cost Against High-Stakes Asia Cup 2025 Match Versus Pakistan

The upcoming Asia Cup 2025 match between India and Pakistan has sparked a heated debate, with former Indian batter Manoj Tiwary expressing strong reservations about the game proceeding in light of recent events. The match is scheduled for September 14 in Dubai.

Tiwary's criticism centers on the perceived insensitivity of prioritizing a cricket match over the value of human life, particularly in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack in April, which claimed the lives of 26 tourists. In response to the attack, India reportedly launched Operation Sindoor, targeting terrorist networks across the Line of Control.

"I am a little surprised that this match is going to happen," Tiwary stated, questioning what the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) hopes to achieve by playing with Pakistan under the current circumstances. He conveyed his inability to comprehend how the value of human life could be perceived as "zero," and declared he would not be watching the match.

The Sports Ministry has confirmed India's participation in the Asia Cup, clarifying that while bilateral sporting ties with Pakistan remain suspended, India will participate in international and multilateral tournaments where both nations are present. This stance aligns with India's long-standing policy of not engaging in bilateral cricket with Pakistan since 2013, while still participating in events like the Asia Cup and ICC tournaments.

The decision to allow the match to proceed has faced opposition, with some political figures raising concerns in Parliament. Concerns have been raised about whether international sporting credibility should take precedence over national interest and security. The controversy also draws attention to the World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025, where some Indian players withdrew, leading to the cancellation of a match against Pakistan. India also forfeited the semi-final, giving Pakistan a walkover.

Despite the ongoing tensions, the Asia Cup 2025 is set to take place in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from September 9 to 28. Eight teams will compete in the T20I format, with the tournament serving as crucial preparation for the 2026 T20 World Cup. The participating teams include India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Oman, Hong Kong, and the United Arab Emirates.

India's squad for the Asia Cup 2025 is led by Suryakumar Yadav, with Shubman Gill as vice-captain. The squad includes a mix of experienced players and emerging talents. Pakistan has also announced their squad and have begun preparations in Dubai.

The India-Pakistan match on September 14 is expected to be a high-profile clash, attracting global attention. The two teams are in Group A along with UAE and Oman. While some question the decision to proceed with the match given the current geopolitical climate, the Indian government has maintained its position of participating in multilateral events while keeping bilateral ties suspended.
