Sunita Ahuja, wife of Bollywood actor Govinda, has often shared her perspective on marriage, relationships, and the roles women play within them. Her comments, sometimes bold and unconventional, have sparked both praise and debate, particularly regarding infidelity and self-care.
In a candid interview, Sunita discussed the dynamics she shares with Govinda after many years of marriage. She playfully mentioned that they still engage in "gali-galoch" (playful arguments and banter), reflecting a comfortable and informal bond. She also touched upon the topic of infidelity in relationships, offering a somewhat controversial piece of advice to women. Sunita stated that women should never assume their partners are innocent of infidelity. She argued that if a man does cheat, the other woman can become deeply entrenched in his life, making it difficult to remove her, even if the wife leaves.
Sunita's perspective on infidelity has been interpreted in various ways. Some believe she was subtly hinting at her own experiences within her marriage to Govinda, particularly given past rumors of his involvement with other women. Others view it as a pragmatic, if cynical, observation on the complexities of relationships.
Beyond the topic of infidelity, Sunita has also spoken about the importance of self-care for women within a marriage. She has openly discussed the imbalance in traditional marital roles, where wives often go above and beyond to care for their husbands, while the gesture is rarely reciprocated. Sunita questioned why women are expected to constantly serve their husbands, recalling her own early days of marriage when she would perform tasks such as putting on her husband's socks and powdering his feet. She emphasized that a woman's life should not solely revolve around her husband, children, and in-laws.
To that end, Sunita revealed that she has a personal ritual of taking time for herself, spending her birthday alone for the past 12 years to connect with nature and enjoy solitude. She encouraged other women to prioritize self-love and break free from outdated expectations, urging them to take at least four days off each year for themselves. "We are born alone," she stated, "and it's important to live for ourselves too, not just for our families".
Recently, Sunita addressed rumors of a potential divorce, clarifying that separate living arrangements with Govinda were due to practical reasons. She affirmed her strong bond with Govinda and dismissed any suggestions that someone could come between them. Sunita recounted praying for a happy marriage with Govinda and expressed her belief that the goddess Mahakali had always fulfilled her wishes. She emphasized her deep devotion and belief that anyone trying to break her family would face the goddess's justice. Govinda and Sunita married on March 11, 1987 and have two children, Tina and Yashvardhan.
