A tour bus, carrying 54 passengers including two employees of the bus company, crashed on a New York highway on Friday, August 22, 2025, resulting in 5 fatalities and multiple injuries. The bus was en route to New York City from Niagara Falls when the accident occurred on Interstate 90 near Pembroke, approximately 25 miles east of Buffalo.
According to New York State Police, the bus was traveling eastbound when, for unknown reasons, the driver lost control of the vehicle. The bus went into the median, the driver overcorrected, and the bus ended up in a ditch on the right side of the road. The bus was traveling at full speed and did not collide with any other vehicles.
First responders rushed to the scene to rescue victims. Many passengers were ejected from the bus as windows shattered. According to a state police spokesperson, James O'Callaghan, there were "multiple fatalities, multiple entrapments, and multiple injuries". It was later confirmed that five adult passengers died as a result of the crash. Passengers on the bus ranged in age from 1 to 74.
Most of the passengers were believed to be of Indian, Chinese, and Filipino descent. Translators were brought to the scene and to local hospitals to assist.
Several area hospitals received patients from the crash. Erie County Medical Center (ECMC), a level 1 adult trauma center, received 24 patients, including two who underwent surgery and two admitted to the intensive care unit. United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia, New York, treated and released two patients. Six patients were treated at the University of Rochester Medical Center, with two in critical condition and four in stable condition. Injuries ranged from head trauma to broken arms and legs.
The New York State Police are investigating the cause of the crash. While the investigation is ongoing, mechanical failure and operator impairment have been ruled out. The driver is cooperating with the authorities, and no charges have been filed at this time.
The bus was operated by M&Y Tour Inc. Following the accident, the New York State Thruway was closed in both directions between exits 48A and 49.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene with broken glass and personal belongings scattered across the highway. According to O'Callaghan, it appeared that most of the passengers were not wearing seatbelts, which may have contributed to the number of people ejected from the bus.
