Since assuming office in 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently emphasized self-reliance in his Independence Day speeches, making it a central theme of his address to the nation. This focus on "Atmanirbhar Bharat" (Self-Reliant India) has been a recurring motif, evolving from a call to reduce imports to a comprehensive vision of a strong, independent, and globally competitive India.
In his inaugural Independence Day speech in 2014, Modi, identifying himself as an "outsider in Delhi," challenged the youth to reflect on why India, despite its immense potential, still relied on imports for even the smallest of items. He stressed the importance of ensuring that all "Made-in-India" goods adhered to two key standards: "zero defect and zero effect," emphasizing both quality and environmental responsibility. This initial call laid the foundation for his broader vision of a self-reliant India, long before global events like the COVID-19 pandemic and rising international trade tensions further underscored the need for resilient domestic supply chains.
Over the years, Modi's speeches have reiterated the importance of self-reliance across various sectors. He consistently stressed the need to reduce dependence on foreign products and enhance domestic manufacturing. The "Make in India" initiative, launched early in his tenure, aimed to transform India into a global manufacturing hub, attracting foreign investment and promoting local production. Skill development programs like "Skill India" were also launched to create a workforce capable of supporting a self-reliant economy.
The COVID-19 pandemic further amplified the focus on self-reliance. In his 2020 Independence Day address, Modi emphasized that "Atmanirbhar Bharat" was not just a word but a "mantra" for the people. He stressed that self-sufficiency meant not only reducing imports but also increasing the levels of skills and creativity within the country. The government subsequently announced a focus on 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' after the COVID-19 pandemic, reducing sourcing of products from other nations and putting more thrust on 'Vocal for Local'.
In recent years, amidst growing global economic challenges and trade protectionism, Modi has urged Indians to embrace "swadeshi" (local) and take pride in domestic products. Facing stiff US tariffs, Modi appealed to the nation to embrace "swadeshi", and set out his government's drive towards "atmanirbharta" -- self-reliance -- in everything from jet engines and EV batteries to fertilisers. He has called upon traders and shopkeepers to display "Swadeshi goods sold here" signs, promoting a sense of national pride and encouraging consumers to support local businesses.
In his most recent address, Modi emphasized the need to reach new heights in manufacturing by adopting the "daam kam, dum zyada" mantra, which means offering more value at a lower cost. He has also highlighted the importance of innovation and technology in achieving self-reliance, urging the youth, scientists, and government departments to focus on developing indigenous technologies. Operation Sindoor being an example of such self-reliance and the power of 'Made in India' being displayed. Modi's vision extends beyond mere economic self-sufficiency. He envisions a New India that is secure, prosperous, and strong, capable of playing a leading role on the global stage. He has called for the country to define its own destiny and to work towards becoming a "Viksit Bharat" (Developed India) by 2047.
