The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT-KGP) is collaborating with UNESCO to develop a comprehensive plan to make Durga Puja more accessible to all, especially senior citizens, people with disabilities, pregnant women, and children. This initiative recognizes Durga Puja as one of the world's largest cultural gatherings, drawing over 185 million visitors in 2024, including 17,000 foreigners, and contributing an estimated $10.2 billion to the economy. Despite its global appeal and economic significance, a significant portion of the population faces challenges in fully participating in the festivities.
The primary goal of this program is to bridge the accessibility gap, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their physical limitations or age, can enjoy the cultural richness of Durga Puja. IIT-KGP is tasked with creating a draft plan that will provide specific guidelines for Puja committees. These guidelines will encompass various aspects of the Puja experience, including designated pick-up and drop-off zones, the construction of ramps for easier access, and the implementation of clear and concise signage.
Professor Haimanti Banerji from the Department of Architecture & Regional Planning at IIT-KGP, stated that the draft plan will be ready soon. The team has been working on this project for approximately two months, consulting with domain experts and visiting Puja pandals to gain a thorough understanding of the existing infrastructure and potential areas for improvement.
The initiative involves several key stakeholders, including the West Bengal government and MassArt. MassArt will play a crucial role in implementing the program, with initial implementation planned during its Preview Show 2025 in Kolkata. The long-term vision is to expand the program's reach across West Bengal, setting a new standard for inclusive cultural celebrations.
Junhi Han, chief of culture sector, UNESCO South Asia Regional Office-New Delhi, highlighted the importance of addressing the accessibility gap to ensure that the festival's benefits are available to everyone. The collaboration between UNESCO, IIT-KGP, the West Bengal government, and MassArt demonstrates a concerted effort to promote inclusivity and enhance the overall experience of Durga Puja for all attendees.
This initiative aligns with broader efforts to create more inclusive and accessible environments for people with disabilities. By focusing on specific areas such as mobility, communication, and sensory experiences, the program aims to remove barriers and create a more welcoming atmosphere for all. The success of this program could serve as a model for other cultural events and festivals, both in India and around the world, demonstrating the importance of inclusivity and accessibility in celebrating cultural heritage.
