In a recent press briefing, the Indian government revealed that Pakistan deployed 300-400 Turkish-made drones in a coordinated attack targeting multiple locations across Indian territory. The incident, which occurred overnight, has heightened tensions between the two nations.
According to Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, the drones were used to target 36 sites in or near cities and towns spanning Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan, and Punjab, stretching from Srinagar to Jaisalmer and Pathankot. Sightings were also reported at the Siachen Glacier base camp in Ladakh and the Kutch area in Gujarat, highlighting the extensive reach of the operation.
Indian defense systems were swift in their response, with Colonel Qureshi stating that 50 drones were shot down and another 20 were neutralized through radio frequency jamming. Many of the drones were reportedly unarmed, potentially indicating a reconnaissance mission to test India's defense capabilities. However, a number of the drones were equipped with cameras, suggesting an intelligence-gathering objective.
The Indian Army spokesperson, Vyomika Singh, has accused Pakistan of using commercial air traffic as a shield during the attacks.
The government has condemned the drone attacks as a blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement, particularly in light of ongoing small arms fire and artillery shelling across the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, which has resulted in casualties, including the death of a soldier. India claims to have inflicted heavy damage in response, disabling Pakistani air defense networks and shooting down drones and missiles.
Amidst rising tensions, several district administrations in Punjab have enforced night-time blackouts, and approximately 27 airports across India have been temporarily shut down. India had previously launched "Operation Sindoor," targeting alleged terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir. Pakistan has denied these attacks, with Pakistani officials claiming they have only engaged in defensive responses to Indian attacks. They further allege that India has launched attack drones into Pakistan, resulting in civilian casualties.
According to reports, the drones used in the attack were Turkish-made Asisguard Songar armed UAVs. These drones can be equipped with automatic machine guns and bombers and can transmit real-time video and telemetry data to operators.
The Nepalese Foreign Ministry has stated it is in contact with its citizens in Pakistan, including students, as the conflict escalates.
