Amid rapidly escalating tensions with Pakistan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a meeting with the Tri-Services Chiefs at his residence to review the current security situation. This high-level meeting occurred in the wake of heightened cross-border activity and retaliatory measures following a deadly terrorist attack in Indian-administered Kashmir.

The present crisis stems from an attack on tourists in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025, which resulted in 26 casualties, including 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen. India has accused the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) for the attack. In response, India launched "Operation Sindoor" on May 7, targeting nine locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, alleging these sites were used for planning the attacks. Pakistan has denied involvement in the Pahalgam attack and called for a neutral investigation.

Recent reports indicate a significant increase in military activity along the border. India claims it has thwarted attempts by Pakistan to target military installations in multiple cities using missiles and drones. In response to these attacks, Indian forces claim to have neutralized a Pakistani air defense system in Lahore. Pakistan, on the other hand, alleges that India has launched missiles into Pakistani territory, resulting in civilian casualties. Each country denies the other's claims.

The meeting at the Prime Minister's residence included discussions on the overall security preparedness and potential strategies moving forward. It's reported that PM Modi has granted the armed forces "complete operational freedom" to respond to the situation as deemed necessary. Home Minister Amit Shah has also reviewed the situation along the border and at airports, further highlighting the seriousness of the situation. Due to the rising tensions, Delhi has been placed on high alert, and leave has been suspended for government employees.

This recent surge in hostilities is part of a long history of conflict between India and Pakistan. The roots of the conflict trace back to the partition of British India in 1947, and the ongoing dispute over the region of Jammu and Kashmir. Both countries possess nuclear capabilities, adding another layer of complexity to the situation.

The international community has expressed concern over the escalating tensions and has urged both sides to exercise restraint. However, with accusations and counter-accusations flying, and military actions escalating, the situation remains highly volatile. Some reports suggest that Gulf States may play a key role in de-escalating the tensions.
