Pakistan Claims Retaliation: Cross-Border Firing Escalates, Raising Fears of Worsening India-Pakistan Conflict Along the Border

Tensions between Pakistan and India have escalated dramatically, with Pakistan claiming retaliation against India following a series of attacks. The situation has been described as "looking like a war" as both sides exchange fire and accusations.

The recent escalation began with India launching missile strikes into Pakistan, which they claimed targeted "terrorist camps" in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Pakistan swiftly condemned these attacks, calling them a "blatant act of war" and promising retaliation. In response to India's "Operation Sindoor," Pakistan launched what they called "Operation Bunyan Marsoos". Pakistan's military stated that retaliatory strikes were launched against India after three airbases were targeted by Indian forces, accusing India of using "air-to-surface missiles" from warplanes. Pakistan has claimed to have targeted airbases and other military installations in India. Security sources also claimed that a BrahMos missile storage site was hit.

Pakistan Civil Aviation announced the closure of its airspace from 03:15 am local time (22:15 GMT) on Saturday until 12 noon (07:00 GMT) following the attacks. Explosions and air raid sirens have been reported across Indian-administered Kashmir and India's Punjab state. The Indian military stated that drones were sighted in 26 locations and are being "tracked and engaged". Three people were reported injured in a drone strike on the Indian city of Ferozepur in Punjab state.

India has also claimed that Pakistan has been targeting several locations in India, particularly in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab. According to reports, Pakistani attempts to target the Air Force Station in Jammu were thwarted. Explosions were heard in Srinagar, Baramulla and Udhampur.

Both sides have presented conflicting narratives regarding the targets and casualties of the attacks. India has maintained that its strikes targeted only armed groups, while Pakistan has claimed that many civilians, including children, have been killed and wounded. Pakistan has also accused India of hitting a mosque in Bahawalpur.

The international community has expressed serious concern over the escalating tensions. The G7 has urged maximum restraint from both India and Pakistan and called for direct dialogue. The UN has also stressed that the world cannot afford a military confrontation between India and Pakistan. Diplomats have piled pressure on leaders of both countries to step back.

The current crisis is rooted in the long-simmering tensions between India and Pakistan, particularly over the disputed Kashmir region. The conflict has been further fueled by the recent attack on tourists in Pahalgam in Indian-administered Kashmir, which India blames on Pakistan. Pakistan denies involvement in the attack.

As the situation continues to unfold, the potential for further escalation remains high. Both sides have vowed to retaliate for any perceived aggression, raising concerns about a dangerous cycle of violence. The international community is closely monitoring the situation and urging both countries to de-escalate and engage in dialogue to find a peaceful resolution.
