Just hours after India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire on Saturday, May 10, 2025, the agreement was allegedly violated by Pakistan, prompting a fierce response from Indian forces. The ceasefire, which was to halt all military actions by land, air, and sea, was allegedly breached by renewed shelling and drone attacks across multiple border districts in Jammu and Kashmir, Gujarat, and Rajasthan.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed the ceasefire violation and stated that Indian forces were retaliating and had been instructed to respond firmly to any further breaches. Misri held Pakistan accountable for the renewed hostilities and urged them to cease provocations immediately. According to DD News, a complete blackout was enforced in several districts of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan following reports of Pakistani infiltration. Explosions were also reported in Srinagar and Jammu.
Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai, DGMO, stated that the activities of the past few days were akin to war. He also noted that infiltration across the Line of Control (LoC) is typically carried out by terrorists, but there is information suggesting the Pakistani army may also be involved in attempts to harm Indian posts.
Air Marshal AK Bharti asserted India's capability to strike any Pakistani system. Vice Admiral AN Pramod stated that Pakistan knows what India will do if it takes certain actions.
The announcement of the initial ceasefire was made after the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of Pakistan contacted his Indian counterpart, agreeing to halt all firing and military action. However, this understanding was short-lived. The Indian Army stated that Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi reviewed the security situation and granted full authority to Army Commanders to counter any violation of the ceasefire understanding.
The situation remains tense, with Indian forces maintaining strict vigilance and responding to any further violations. The alleged ceasefire violation has raised concerns about the sustainability of any agreements between the two nations.
