The recent martyrdom of Border Security Force (BSF) Sub-Inspector Mohammad Imtiaz in cross-border firing in the RS Pura sector of Jammu has been met with an outpouring of grief and tributes. The officer, a resident of Bihar's Saran district, was killed on May 10, 2025, while leading his post, during unprovoked firing from Pakistani forces.
News of his death triggered mourning in his native village, where he was remembered as a warm and well-respected figure. Imtiaz had returned home just a month prior to celebrate Eid with his family. A neighbor described him as "cheerful and deeply committed to his duty".
The BSF held a wreath-laying ceremony at its Frontier Headquarters in Jammu to honor the fallen officer. Senior BSF officials and Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha paid their respects. The BSF stated, "All ranks of BSF Jammu paid homage to Braveheart Sub Inspector Md Imtiyaz who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty".
Imtiaz is survived by his wife, two daughters, and two sons. His elder son, Mohammad Imran, a biometric engineer at PMCH in Patna, immediately traveled to Jammu upon receiving the news.
In a poignant moment, Mohammad Imran expressed his immense pride in his father's service and sacrifice. "My father was a very strong person. I am very proud of my father," he said. He recounted speaking to his father on May 10, shortly after he had been injured, urging the government to respond firmly to prevent similar tragedies. "The government should give such a befitting reply that no son loses his father ever," Imran stated.
Several political figures have also expressed their condolences and lauded Imtiaz's sacrifice. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav stated, "We are proud of him (BSF sub-inspector) Mohammed Imtiaz) that he made the supreme sacrifice for the country...We can sleep in peace only because of the brave Army guarding our borders". Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed deep condolences and announced that the state government would provide an honorarium to Imtiaz's family and conduct his last rites with full police honors.
The BSF is coordinating with local authorities to ensure Imtiaz's mortal remains are taken to his native village with dignity and respect. The force is also providing support to his family during this difficult time.
The incident occurred amid heightened tensions and cross-border firing between India and Pakistan. Imtiaz's death came hours after a ceasefire agreement was reached between the two countries. The BSF responded to the firing, destroying a suspected terror launchpad in Sialkot.
Sub-Inspector Mohammed Imtiaz's sacrifice is a reminder of the challenges faced by security personnel who safeguard the nation's borders. His bravery and commitment to duty have been widely praised, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations.
