In Hyderabad, a 33-year-old psychologist, Dr. A. Rajitha, tragically died by suicide on Tuesday, allegedly due to harassment by her husband and his family. The Sanjeeva Reddy Nagar Police have registered a case against her husband, Rohit, and his family members for abetment of suicide.
Dr. Rajitha's path crossed with Rohit when he was a patient at a mental health hospital in Banjara Hills, where she was interning. Reports indicate that Rohit showed significant improvement under her care, and he later proposed to her. With the support of both families, Rajitha agreed to marry him, believing she could aid in his recovery.
However, the situation allegedly deteriorated after the marriage. Rohit reportedly stopped working and began using Rajitha's salary for his personal expenses. Rajitha, who worked as a child psychologist at a well-known international school, urged him to change his behavior, but he allegedly refused.
The harassment reportedly escalated, involving Rohit, his parents Kishtaiah and Surekha, and his brother Mohit. Rajitha's family claims that Rohit physically assaulted her whenever she refused to give him money.
Unable to bear the abuse, Rajitha first attempted suicide on July 16 by consuming sleeping pills. She was hospitalized and later taken home by her parents. On July 28, she attempted suicide again by jumping from the fourth-floor bathroom window of her apartment. She suffered severe head injuries and was declared brain dead at the hospital.
Based on a complaint filed by her father, Sub-Inspector Narsimha Goud, the police have registered a case under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code against Rohit and his family. The police have confirmed that an investigation is ongoing, and they are gathering evidence related to the harassment allegations.
This tragic incident highlights the serious issue of harassment and domestic abuse, as well as the importance of mental health support.
