Following recent skirmishes and heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, claims emerged from Pakistan regarding the destruction of India's S-400 air defense system at the Adampur Airbase in Punjab. These claims were amplified through various channels, including state-run media and social media platforms, with assertions of inflicting heavy damage on the airbase. However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to the Adampur Airbase has effectively debunked these claims, providing a clear indication that the base is fully operational and that the S-400 system remains intact.
The visit, which occurred on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, served as a strong rebuttal to Pakistan's misinformation campaign. Images and reports from the visit clearly showed PM Modi interacting with air force personnel at the airbase, with a MiG-29 jet and an operational S-400 missile system visible in the background. This visual evidence directly contradicted Pakistan's assertions of destruction and significant damage.
Prior to PM Modi's visit, the Ministry of External Affairs had already refuted Pakistan's claims, labeling them as part of a broader "misinformation campaign". Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, in a press briefing, stated that Pakistan's claims of damaging the S-400 and BrahMos missile systems with JF-17 fighter jets were "completely wrong". She also dismissed claims of damage to airfields in Sirsa, Jammu, Pathankot, Bathinda, Naliya, and Bhuj.
The Adampur Airbase was among the key military locations that Pakistan attempted to attack following India's launch of Operation Sindoor. This operation was initiated in response to a terrorist attack in Pahalgam where 26 people were killed. In retaliation, Pakistan launched Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos, targeting various Indian air bases with "high-speed" missiles, UCAVs, drones, and long-range weapons. While India acknowledged "limited damage" to equipment and personnel at air force stations in Udhampur, Pathankot, Adampur, and Bhuj, they firmly denied any significant destruction.
PM Modi's visit to the Adampur Airbase not only served to counter Pakistan's propaganda but also boosted the morale of the Indian armed forces. He described his interaction with the "brave air warriors and soldiers" as a "very special experience" and reaffirmed the nation's gratitude for their service. The Prime Minister's presence at the base sent a strong message of solidarity and operational readiness.
In the wake of these events, India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire on May 10, followed by talks between their respective Director Generals of Military Operations (DGMO). Both sides have committed to maintaining the ceasefire and avoiding aggressive actions. However, tensions remain, and the incident highlights the ongoing challenges of maintaining peace and stability in the region.
