In the wake of the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 civilians on April 22, India retaliated with a series of strikes across the border. Union Home Minister Amit Shah asserted that "Operation Sindoor" saw the successful targeting of nine terror sites located approximately 100 kilometers inside Pakistani territory.

Shah emphasized that the operation, executed on May 7, reflected the Modi government's firm political will, the precision of Indian intelligence agencies, and the potent strike capabilities of the armed forces. He lauded the seamless coordination between intelligence agencies and the armed forces during the operation. Shah made these remarks while inaugurating a new Multi-Agency Centre (MAC) in Delhi, designed to enhance intelligence sharing among various law enforcement and security agencies. The MAC, initially established after the Kargil conflict in 2001 and strengthened after the 2008 Mumbai attacks, aims to provide a comprehensive platform for addressing national security challenges. The upgraded center incorporates advanced technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning to improve data analysis and threat prediction.

Operation Sindoor unfolded after a period of heightened tensions, triggered by the Pahalgam attack, which India attributed to a Pakistan-based terrorist organization, The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy for Lashkar-e-Taiba. Pakistan has denied any involvement. The strikes targeted what Indian officials described as terrorist training facilities, resulting in significant casualties among militants. Pakistan, in turn, claimed to have targeted military facilities in India and asserted that its drones had surveilled Delhi.

The cross-border actions and aerial engagements led to a dangerous escalation, raising concerns of a potential full-blown war between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. International mediation, particularly by the United States, played a crucial role in de-escalating the conflict. A ceasefire was eventually agreed upon, halting military actions on May 10.

The situation remains tense, with both sides declaring victory and vowing to respond strongly to any future provocations. The recent events have underscored the fragility of peace between India and Pakistan and the ever-present threat of terrorism in the region. The international community continues to urge restraint and dialogue to prevent further escalation and promote stability.
