The woman who became the face of the opposition's "124 Not Out" protest, Minta Devi, has come forward to state that she is 35 years old and attributes the discrepancies regarding her age to the Election Commission (EC). The "124 Not Out" slogan refers to alleged irregularities in voter lists, with the opposition claiming that some individuals are listed with impossibly high ages, like 124 years old, or that there are numerous "fake votes" registered at single addresses.
The INDIA bloc, a coalition of opposition parties, has been actively protesting these alleged irregularities, particularly concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. Opposition MPs have been seen wearing white T-shirts with the "124 Not Out" slogan. Prominent leaders, including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, have participated in protests against the EC, accusing it of failing to uphold the principle of "One Man, One Vote" and neglecting its duty to protect the Constitution. Rahul Gandhi has been particularly critical, asserting that the EC is not enforcing the principle which he describes as the foundation of the Constitution.
Tejashwi Yadav, Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Legislative Assembly, has also criticized the Election Commission, accusing it of misusing its constitutional status during the SIR of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar. He remarked that the EC often does not listen to the Supreme Court and is misusing its status as a constitutional institution.
The opposition's protests have included marches to the Election Commission office, during which leaders like Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were detained by the Delhi Police. These demonstrations signify the opposition's intent to intensify their campaign against the alleged irregularities. CPI(M) MP P Sandosh Kumar stated that the INDIA parties are energized and that this has become an all-India campaign.
The BJP refutes the opposition's claims, dismissing their campaign as a "tamasha" and political forgery. They challenge the opposition to file formal complaints with evidence. The BJP questions why, if the EC was biased in their favor, they would not have secured a significantly larger number of seats in past elections.
The Election Commission has also come under scrutiny regarding its independence and impartiality. Some accuse the EC of being compromised, with one Congress spokesperson claiming, "it is now just the ECI which is the BJP". The opposition questions why the EC does not want to connect the voters list to the Aadhaar card. They also allege that the EC has made fun of the opposition and refused to answer questions in the past.
