The Communist Party of India (CPI) Kerala Secretary Binoy Viswam has launched a scathing attack on Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor, suggesting that the Thiruvananthapuram MP is seeking a place within the "BJP's sleeping cells inside Congress." The CPI leader's remarks followed Tharoor's acceptance of a government invitation to lead a multi-party delegation overseas to present India's stance against Pakistan concerning terrorism.
Viswam's criticism, posted on X, alluded to Rahul Gandhi's concerns regarding the presence of BJP "sleeping cells" within the Congress party. He stated, "@RahulGandhi Gandhi's concern about BJP sleeping cells inside Congress is not so simple. It seems that @sashhitharoor is in search of his berth in that cell. @BJP4India knows how to make use of such elements. For them, even the fight against terrorism is a hunt for party gains!"
Tharoor's decision to accept the government's invitation came despite his name not being among the official nominations put forth by the Congress party. The Congress had nominated former Union minister Anand Sharma, deputy leader in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi, Rajya Sabha MP Syed Naseer Hussain, and Lok Sabha MP Raja Brar, after the government requested four MPs for the delegations.
Defending his acceptance, Tharoor asserted that he saw no political agenda in the invitation. He highlighted that Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju had formally requested him to lead the delegation, taking into account his diplomatic experience. "I see no politics in it. According to me, politics become important when we have a nation. We all are Indians. When the nation is in crisis and the central government seeks the help of a citizen, what other answer would you give," he told reporters.
This is not the first time Shashi Tharoor has faced scrutiny for his seemingly independent stances and actions. Known for his articulate and often unconventional views, Tharoor has sometimes found himself at odds with the Congress party's official line. His willingness to engage with the BJP-led government on various issues has also drawn criticism from within the party and from its political rivals.
The CPI's accusation adds another layer to the ongoing debate about Tharoor's political leanings and his role within the Congress. It also underscores the deep-seated ideological differences and political fault lines that continue to shape Indian politics. Whether Tharoor's actions are driven by genuine national interest or personal ambition remains a subject of speculation and debate. Only time will tell how this latest controversy will impact his political career and his relationship with the Congress party.
