India is gearing up for a week of intense weather, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds across many regions until Saturday, May 24, 2025. The wet weather is expected to impact the northeast, south, central, west, and east of the country, potentially causing disruptions to daily life and agricultural activities.
The IMD has issued warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall in several states. The west coast, including Karnataka, Konkan, Goa, and Kerala, along with adjoining parts of peninsular India, are expected to experience intense showers throughout the week. Northeast India, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim are also likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over the next 5-6 days.
Specifically, isolated heavy rainfall is predicted over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal from May 18th to 20th; Kerala, Mahe, Coastal Karnataka, and North Interior Karnataka from May 18th to 24th; Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam from May 20th to 22nd; Rayalaseema from May 18th to 20th; and South Interior Karnataka from May 18th to 21st. Coastal Karnataka is particularly vulnerable and is expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall on May 20th.
In Northeast India, Arunachal Pradesh is expected to receive isolated heavy rainfall from May 18th to 20th, while Assam and Meghalaya are likely to experience similar conditions from May 18th to 24th. Tripura and Nagaland are also expected to have isolated heavy rainfall on May 18th. Assam and Meghalaya may experience isolated, very heavy rainfall during the period of May 18th to 20th.
The IMD has also warned of thundersqualls with wind speeds of 50-60 kmph, gusting up to 70 kmph, over Konkan and Goa from May 20th to 23rd, Madhya Maharashtra from May 18th to 20th and 23rd, and Marathawada on May 18th and 20th. Isolated hailstorms are likely over Himachal Pradesh on May 19th and Uttarakhand on May 19th and 20th. Other areas, including Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, will also see isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, especially from May 18th to 20th.
Delhi is expected to have partly cloudy weather with very light to light rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph, and temporarily reaching up to 50 kmph during thunderstorms. The maximum temperature in Delhi is expected to range between 38-40°C, with the minimum temperature between 27-29°C.
While most of the country prepares for rain, west Rajasthan and Jammu & Kashmir will continue to face heatwave conditions.
The IMD advises residents in the affected areas to take necessary precautions and stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and warnings. Potential impacts of the heavy rainfall include localized flooding, waterlogging, and disruptions to traffic and transportation. Farmers are advised to take appropriate measures to protect their crops from the adverse weather conditions.
