Manchester Airport has announced the immediate availability of bookings for its inaugural direct flight to Mumbai, India. This landmark service, operated by IndiGo, marks the first direct connection between the North of the UK and India's financial capital.
Beginning in July 2025, the new route will offer three weekly flights, providing a crucial link between the regions. IndiGo will utilize Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft on the route.
Airport officials emphasize the importance of this new connection for both leisure and business travelers. The direct flights are expected to significantly boost trade and investment opportunities between the North of England and India, the world's fastest-growing major economy. Furthermore, the route will provide a convenient travel option for the large population of people with Indian heritage living in the airport's catchment area, connecting them more easily with family and friends.
Chris Woodroofe, Managing Director of Manchester Airport, stated that this route makes Manchester Airport the only Northern airport with a direct connection to India, solidifying its position as one of Europe's best-connected airports. He also noted that the new service will connect the region to the world's fastest-growing economy, opening up stronger trade and investment opportunities, and connect half a million people with Indian heritage in the area to family and friends.
IndiGo's entry into the long-haul market with this Manchester-Mumbai route is a significant step for the airline. IndiGo is the first carrier to offer a nonstop service between these two cities. In addition to the Manchester route, IndiGo will also launch flights from Amsterdam to Mumbai.
To celebrate the launch of this important route, IndiGo will offer complimentary hot meals and beverages, featuring iconic Indian brands, to all passengers. The airline also emphasizes the seamless connectivity offered to over 90 destinations within India through IndiGo's domestic network, further benefiting customers traveling from Manchester to Mumbai. The new service is expected to enhance connectivity between India and the UK, strengthening economic, educational, and cultural ties.
The announcement has been welcomed by business and community leaders across the North of England, who see the direct flight as a catalyst for further growth and collaboration between the regions. The convenient, direct connection is expected to stimulate tourism, facilitate business partnerships, and encourage cultural exchange.
