On Friday, May 23, 2025, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visited former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in New Delhi. Malik has been undergoing treatment at the hospital since being admitted on May 11 and is currently on dialysis.
Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, arrived at the hospital around 5:30 PM to inquire about Malik's health. Sources indicate that Gandhi spoke with the doctors attending to Malik to get a comprehensive understanding of his condition. According to sources from The Tribune, Malik had only regained consciousness earlier that day after four days.
Following the visit, Rahul Gandhi posted on X, "Today I met former Jammu and Kashmir governor Satyapal Malik ji at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and enquired about his health. I hope he gets well soon. I stand with him in this fight for truth."
Satya Pal Malik served as the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir from August 2018 to October 2019, a crucial period that saw the revocation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of the state into two Union Territories.
Adding to Malik's troubles, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed a chargesheet against him and five others on May 22, 2025, just a day before Gandhi's visit. The chargesheet relates to alleged irregularities in the Rs 2,200-crore civil works contract for the Kiru hydropower project. The chargesheet, submitted after a three-year-long investigation, was presented in a special court and names Malik along with the other accused.
Malik had previously claimed that he was offered a bribe of Rs 300 crore to approve two files, one of which was related to the Kiru hydropower project. Last year, after the CBI searched his home, Malik dismissed the allegations, stating that the investigation should focus on those he had flagged for corruption. He asserted his defiance, stating he is a farmer's son and would not be intimidated.
