In a display of extraordinary courage and selflessness, Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari of the Indian Army's Sikkim Scouts tragically lost his life while rescuing an Agniveer from a mountain stream in North Sikkim. The 23-year-old officer, commissioned just six months prior, on December 14, 2024, exemplified the highest traditions of the Indian Army, placing the life of a fellow soldier above his own.
The incident occurred on Thursday morning when Lieutenant Tiwari was leading a route-clearing patrol toward a tactical operating base (TOB) in a high-altitude area. Around 11 am, Agniveer Stephan Subba, a member of the patrol, slipped while crossing a log bridge over a fast-flowing stream and was swept away by the strong current.
Without hesitation, Lieutenant Tiwari jumped into the icy waters to save the Agniveer. Naik Pukar Katel also joined the rescue effort, and together, they successfully pulled Subba to safety. However, in the process, Lieutenant Tiwari was caught by the powerful current and carried nearly 800 meters downstream. Despite immediate rescue efforts by the patrol team, his body was recovered approximately half an hour later.
Lieutenant Tiwari's sacrifice has been hailed nationwide as a symbol of courage, selflessness, and the unwavering bond between officers and soldiers. The Indian Army has praised his actions as a true reflection of the force's core values: selfless service, integrity, and leadership by example.
Lt Gen R.C. Tiwari, Army Commander, Eastern Command, and all ranks have offered heartfelt condolences on the loss of Lt. Shashank Tiwari. The Indian Army stands united with his family during this difficult time.
