Abhishek Banerjee's crime thriller, "Stolen," is set to premiere on Prime Video on June 4, marking the directorial debut of Karan Tejpal. The film boasts a talented cast, including Abhishek Banerjee, Harish Khanna, Mia Maelzer, Sahidur Rahaman, and Shubham, and is produced by Gaurav Dhingra of Jungle Book Studio, with executive producers Anurag Kashyap, Kiran Rao, Nikkhil Advani, and Vikramaditya Motwane lending their support.
"Stolen" follows the intense journey of two brothers from urban backgrounds who witness the kidnapping of a baby from an impoverished mother at a rural railway station in India. Driven by a sense of moral obligation, one of the brothers convinces the other to assist the distraught mother, leading them into a perilous investigation to find the child.
The film is co-written by Karan Tejpal, Gaurav Dhingra, and Swapnil Salkar-Agadbumb. According to Prime Video, "Stolen" is more than just an edge-of-the-seat thriller; it delves into powerful themes of justice, trauma, and human resilience, holding "a mirror to society."
"Cinema that is strong, unflinching, relentless, and emotionally raw will always grab you from the first frame and not let go--that's exactly what 'Stolen' did to me," said executive producer Anurag Kashyap. He further praised the film's fearlessness and Tejpal's embodiment of that spirit, noting that "'Stolen' challenges you, makes you jealous as a filmmaker, and also inspires you at a time when you are clutching at straws for some homegrown cinematic hope."
Kiran Rao, another executive producer, echoed Kashyap's sentiments, while Gaurav Dhingra, the producer and writer, described "Stolen" as "a taut, emotionally resonant thriller -- a human story wrapped in urgency and suspense."
Prior to its release on Prime Video, "Stolen" garnered significant acclaim on the international film festival circuit. It premiered at the 80th Venice Film Festival in 2023, where it received a standing ovation. The film also won Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Actress awards at the Beijing International Film Festival, as well as Best Film and Best Director awards at Japan's Skip City International D-Cinema Festival. The Zurich Film Festival honored "Stolen" with a Special Mention. In India, it was screened at the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival and the International Film Festival of Kerala.
Abhishek Banerjee is known for his gritty and grounded performances, and "Stolen" promises to be another addition to his repertoire of compelling roles. The teaser for the film showcases Banerjee's character going against an entire village to help a mother.
"Stolen" will be available for streaming on Prime Video in India and over 240 countries and territories worldwide starting June 4, 2025.
