Adnan Sami, the renowned singer and composer who became an Indian citizen in 2016, has revealed the painful experience of being denied a visa by Pakistan to attend his mother's funeral in October 2024. In a recent interview with Rajat Sharma on "Aap Ki Adalat," Sami recounted the emotional ordeal of watching his mother's final rites via a WhatsApp video call.

Sami, who was born in London and raised in a distinguished Pakistani family, has been vocal about his reasons for seeking Indian citizenship, citing the deteriorating political climate in Pakistan. Despite having family and property in Pakistan, he has maintained that his decision was driven by a desire for artistic growth and a sense of belonging in India. His choice, however, has often drawn criticism from Pakistani authorities and certain segments of the population.

The singer's mother, Begum Naureen, passed away unexpectedly in October 2024. Sami immediately sought permission from the Indian government to travel to Pakistan to attend her funeral. He stated that the Indian authorities were understanding and swiftly granted him the necessary clearances to travel.

However, when he applied for a visa to Pakistan, his request was denied, despite explaining the purpose of his visit. This refusal left Sami with no option but to witness his mother's Janaza through a video call. The emotional distress of not being able to physically be present to pay his last respects was palpable as he shared the experience.

Sami's strained relationship with Pakistan is not new. After his decision to become an Indian citizen, he has faced backlash and criticism from across the border. In the same interview, Sami addressed the accusations that he sought Indian citizenship for financial gain. He has consistently refuted these claims, emphasizing that his move was motivated by his disillusionment with the political environment in Pakistan and his pursuit of a more fulfilling artistic journey.

In addition to the visa denial, Sami has also been critical of the Pakistani army, calling them "traitors to humanity." He recounted instances where the army's actions have caused immense suffering, including an incident involving his chef's son who became a "jihadi." Sami's outspoken views on these matters have further strained his relationship with Pakistan.

The incident has sparked widespread reactions, with many expressing sympathy for Sami's situation. It has also reignited the debate about the complexities of citizenship, identity, and the strained relations between India and Pakistan. Sami's story serves as a poignant reminder of the personal costs of political tensions and the challenges faced by those who navigate cross-border identities.
