A 35-year-old man from Bhagalpur district in Bihar has been arrested for allegedly threatening to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his two-day visit to the state. The arrest was made on Thursday evening, May 29, 2025, from Maheshi village, which falls under the jurisdiction of Sultanganj Police Station.
The Prime Minister arrived in Patna on Thursday for his scheduled two-day visit to Bihar, which includes launching development projects worth over Rs 48,520 crore in Karakat, Rohtas, and addressing a public rally ahead of the upcoming assembly elections later this year.
According to police reports, a WhatsApp call was made to security agencies from Bhagalpur, threatening to kill the PM during his Bihar visit. This prompted immediate action, with the Bhagalpur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) being informed and a team constituted to investigate the matter.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the threatening call was made using the mobile number of a 71-year-old man named Mantu Chaudhary. However, further technical analysis and questioning revealed that the accused, Sameer Ranjan, made the WhatsApp call from Chaudhary's mobile number using a virtual private network (VPN).
Bhagalpur police stated that it appears the accused made the call to implicate Chaudhary due to an ongoing property dispute between them. During interrogation, Sameer Ranjan admitted to the crime. The police have registered a case against Sameer Ranjan under relevant sections, and a detailed investigation is underway. SSP Hridaykant has termed such acts a serious threat to national security and urged police and security agencies to take such cases seriously.
