Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has strongly criticized the Central government's recent announcement of a ceasefire with Pakistan, alleging that the decision was made without consulting the armed forces. Sukhu voiced his concerns during a 'Jai Hind Sabha,' emphasizing that such a critical decision, impacting national security, should have involved consultations with the military leadership.
Sukhu highlighted that the ceasefire announcement was made public through social media by a third country, a move he found particularly unsettling. He contrasted this approach with the leadership style of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who, according to Sukhu, never compromised on national security matters and always ensured the armed forces were integral to strategic decisions.
The Chief Minister's remarks come in the wake of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, including the recent terror attack in Pahalgam that resulted in the loss of 26 lives. Following the attack, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi promptly offered unconditional support to the Union government in the fight against terrorism. Sukhu underscored the unwavering support of the Himachal Pradesh government and its people for the Indian armed forces, emphasizing their sacrifices and resilience.
India had conducted precision strikes, dubbed Operation Sindoor, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in response to the Pahalgam attack. Subsequently, Pakistan allegedly attempted to retaliate by attacking Indian military bases, leading to fierce counter-attacks by Indian forces on several Pakistani military installations. Ultimately, an understanding was reached between the two nations to end the military confrontation after days of intense cross-border exchanges.
Sukhu recalled a recent visit to Sharchi village in the Tirthan Valley, where he stayed with a former soldier, Subedar Major Anoop Ram. He recounted their discussion about the 1971 India-Pakistan war and how Indira Gandhi's leadership instilled patriotic zeal and boosted the morale of the Indian Army. He further added that Himachal Pradesh has a distinguished legacy of courage and sacrifice, with its soldiers having been awarded four Param Vir Chakras.
During the 'Jai Hind Sabha,' Sukhu also presented a check of Rs 30 lakh to the family of martyr Subedar Major Pawan, reaffirming the state's commitment to honoring the bravery and sacrifices of its soldiers. The event also saw other Congress leaders reiterating the importance of military valor and criticizing the central government's approach to the ceasefire.
The Chief Minister's criticism reflects a broader concern about the importance of involving military expertise in decisions concerning national security, particularly in sensitive situations involving neighboring countries.
