Responding to the widespread and severe flooding in Manipur, the Indian Army and Assam Rifles launched "Operation Jal Rahat 2" and have rescued approximately 800 civilians till date. The operation was initiated following urgent requests for assistance from the Deputy Commissioner, with the primary objective of evacuating and providing relief to those stranded by the rising floodwaters.
Troops of Assam Rifles were immediately deployed, forming Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) to address the most critical areas. These teams were strategically positioned in Porompat, Wankhei, Sanjenthong, Palace Compound, New Checkon, Khurai Heikrumakhong Heinang, Soibam Leikai, Wangkhei Angom Leikai, Nongmeibung Raj Bari, Imphal East district and adjoining areas in Imphal East & West districts of Manipur, ensuring comprehensive coverage of the flood-affected regions.
The rescue operation involved the activation of two major rescue columns. One column focused on the Palace Compound area, where the premises of All India Radio, Imphal, were severely inundated. The swift action of the rescue team ensured the safe relocation of the radio station's staff and critical IT and communication equipment, safeguarding both personnel and essential broadcast infrastructure.
The second column operated in Heikrumakhong, where, in a span of just two and a half hours, they successfully rescued 182 individuals, comprising 35 men, 90 women, and 57 children. Simultaneously, additional rescue efforts in Imphal East and West led to the extrication of 408 people, including 137 men, 179 women, and 92 children. In total, approximately 800 people were rescued, with special attention given to the needs of differently-abled and elderly individuals, numbering between 10 and 20. All those rescued were safely transported to higher ground and secure locations, providing them with immediate shelter and safety.
The rescue operations were conducted under challenging conditions, with multiple columns equipped with buoyant rescue boats working tirelessly to reach and assist those affected. The Assam Rifles have affirmed their unwavering commitment to supporting the people of Manipur throughout this crisis.
In response to the increased risk of flooding during the monsoon season, the Inspector General Assam Rifles (South) has established dedicated Flood Relief Helpline Numbers for Imphal West, Imphal East, and Kakching districts. These helplines, operational 24/7, are manned by trained personnel ready to coordinate with local authorities and deploy rescue teams, medical assistance, and essential relief supplies. The helpline numbers are +91-8652075170 for Imphal West and Imphal East, and +91-7650017209 for Kakching.
The Assam Rifles have a proven track record in flood relief operations. During the devastating floods caused by Cyclone Remal in the previous year, they rescued over 6,500 people under "Operation Jal Rahat", deployed 16 columns, conducted emergency medical evacuations, restored vital infrastructure, and distributed essential supplies. Building on this experience, the Assam Rifles are fully prepared to respond effectively to any flood situation this year, standing as a reliable support for the people of Manipur in their time of need.
