A shocking incident has come to light in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, where a national-level Taekwondo player has alleged gang rape within the premises of an ashram. The survivor claims that the assault occurred after she was offered a "spiked laddoo," a traditional Indian sweet, which caused her to lose consciousness.
According to reports, the incident took place in January of this year, but the complaint was filed nearly four months later. The woman, a resident of the Govind Nagar area of Kanpur, stated that she was seeking a location to open a small business selling used clothing. During her search, she was introduced to a local man named Govind Mahto, who allegedly offered to help her connect with influential people who could assist her in securing a suitable space.
Mahto reportedly took her to the ashram under the guise of introducing her to these individuals. Once inside, she was offered a laddoo. After consuming the sweet, she claims to have become disoriented and lost consciousness. The survivor alleges that she was then gang-raped by Mahto, who is described as the ashram's mahant (chief priest), along with several other individuals, including other temple priests. She has named four individuals in her complaint.
The woman explained that she delayed reporting the incident out of fear of retaliation, citing the accused men's alleged political connections. However, she eventually gathered the courage to come forward and file a complaint with the police.
In a significant development, the survivor has submitted a video to the police as evidence. This video, which has also been circulated on social media, purportedly shows an elderly man assaulting her within the ashram. Authorities have confirmed the existence of the video and its submission as part of the investigation.
Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Mahesh Kumar has confirmed that a complaint has been officially filed and handed over for investigation. The police have visited the ashram room depicted in the video and are currently examining all aspects of the case.
In response to the allegations, the ashram's priests have claimed they were in Prayagraj attending the Kumbh Mela at the time of the alleged incident. They have presented photographs and videos as evidence to support their alibi, which police say are also under scrutiny.
The incident has sparked outrage and raised concerns about the safety and security of women, particularly in places of religious significance. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have assured a thorough examination of all evidence to ensure justice is served.
