The recent attack in Boulder, Colorado, has sparked widespread condemnation, including strong words from Indian parliamentarian Shashi Tharoor. The incident, which authorities are investigating as a "targeted terror attack," occurred on Sunday, June 1, 2025, at the Pearl Street Mall, a popular outdoor space in Boulder.
According to reports, a man identified as Mohamed Sabry Soliman, 45, allegedly used a makeshift flamethrower and Molotov cocktails to attack a group of people participating in a walk and vigil in support of Israeli hostages being held in Gaza. Witnesses reported that Soliman shouted "Free Palestine" during the attack.
The Boulder Police Department received the first calls reporting the attack around 1:26 p.m. local time. Responding officers found multiple victims with injuries consistent with burns. Eight people, including four women and four men, ranging in age from 52 to 88, were injured. Two of the victims were seriously injured and were airlifted to the burn unit at UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora. Other victims were taken to Boulder Community Hospital for treatment.
The FBI is investigating the incident as an act of terrorism. Special Agent in Charge Mark Michalek stated that it was "clear this is a targeted act of violence." The FBI is also conducting court-authorized law enforcement activity related to the attack in El Paso County, where Colorado Springs is located.
Mohamed Sabry Soliman, the suspect, is an Egyptian national who arrived in California in 2022 on a non-immigrant visa that expired in February 2023. He had been residing in Colorado Springs. Soliman was taken into custody at the scene and was treated at a hospital for minor injuries.
Shashi Tharoor, who is leading an all-party Indian parliamentary delegation, expressed his concern over the attack. In a post on X, Tharoor stated, "Members of the Indian MPs' delegation learnt with concern about the terror attack in Boulder, Colorado, today. We are relieved there was no loss of life. We all share the Secretary of State Marco Rubio's view that 'terror has no place' in our countries." Tharoor's delegation is currently in Brazil and is scheduled to travel to the United States on Tuesday.
The attack has also drawn condemnation from Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, who described it as a "terrible antisemitic terror attack" and "pure antisemitism". Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser stated that the attack "appears to be a hate crime given the group that was targeted" and emphasized that "hate has no place in Colorado."
The incident has led to increased security measures in the area, with an 11-block portion of downtown Boulder blocked off for investigation. Authorities have warned people not to fly drones or personal aircraft over the closed area.
The attack in Boulder is a stark reminder of the dangers of ideologically motivated violence and the importance of condemning terrorism in all its forms. As Shashi Tharoor and other leaders have stated, there is no place for terror in our countries.
