Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit Madurai on June 8, 2025, to invigorate the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Tamil Nadu unit ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. The visit is strategically planned to address over 10,000 party functionaries from across the state, signaling a push to strengthen the BJP's presence in the southern state.
Madurai has been chosen as the central location for this mobilization, given its perceived importance in southern Tamil Nadu for cadre engagement. Party insiders have described the event as a "show of unity and strength," aimed at revitalizing the party's base and setting a clear direction for the upcoming elections.
A key focus of Shah's visit will be to address internal divisions within the Tamil Nadu BJP. According to sources within Kamalalayam, the state BJP headquarters, Shah is expected to deliver a firm message emphasizing the importance of aligning behind state president Nainar Nagenthran. Shah's message will be straightforward: rally behind Nagenthran's leadership or step aside. This comes at a crucial time, as some senior leaders have voiced discontent with Nagenthran's leadership. By addressing these issues head-on, Shah aims to quell dissent and ensure a united front as the party prepares for the Assembly polls.
In addition to unifying the party, Shah's visit includes meetings with influential caste and community leaders to broaden the BJP's outreach and solidify social coalitions. Engagement with allies in the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is also on the agenda, with discussions aimed at refining seat-sharing arrangements and overall alliance strategies.
Later in the day, Shah will preside over a core committee meeting of the BJP's Tamil Nadu unit. This session will concentrate on fine-tuning booth-level mobilization strategies, expanding the party's grassroots presence, and identifying constituencies that offer the best prospects for victory. Sources suggest this meeting will serve as a "political reset" for the party.
The Union Home Minister's itinerary includes a visit to the Meenakshi Amman Temple on the morning of June 8th for a darshan. Following this, he will hold meetings at the hotel, reserving substantial time for discussions until lunch. In the afternoon, Shah is scheduled to address BJP functionaries at Velammal Global Hospital Ground in Othakadai, where he will remain until 5:30 PM, engaging with party leaders and office-bearers to discuss election preparedness.
According to BJP leaders, Shah’s visit will provide a strong political message and set the stage for the upcoming Assembly elections. The goal is to galvanize both BJP cadres and alliance partners, reinforcing the NDA's commitment to unseating the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu.
