Dubai's Viral Chocolate Craze Gets a Desi Twist: India's Knafeh Obsession Takes Center Stage.

The viral Dubai chocolate bar, originally inspired by the Middle Eastern dessert kunafa, has taken the world by storm, and India is no exception. This delectable treat, featuring a rich, crunchy filling of kataifi pastry and creamy pistachio, has captured the attention of dessert lovers across the country, leading to a surge in demand and creative adaptations by local chocolatiers.

The trend began in late 2023 when a TikTok video showcasing the "Can't Get Knafeh Of It" chocolate bar by Dubai-based FIX Dessert Chocolatier went viral, amassing millions of views. This sparked a global frenzy, with people eager to experience the unique combination of creamy and crunchy textures and the distinct flavors of kunafa.

Indian brands and chefs were quick to respond to the growing demand, putting their own spin on the viral sensation. From Hyderabad to Mumbai and Kochi, chocolatiers began experimenting with kataifi pastry, pistachio cream, and local ingredients to recreate the essence of the Dubai chocolate bar.

Xocolatl, a dessert shop in Hyderabad, was among the first to introduce its version of the kunafa chocolate bar. According to the founder, Ashmeet Dua, the company decided to create the popular Dubai chocolate bar in September 2024 to keep up with current trends and provide customers with the finest products.

Manam Chocolate, another Indian brand, has also joined the trend, crafting its unique interpretation of the viral chocolate bar. These Indian versions often incorporate locally sourced ingredients and cater to the specific preferences of the Indian palate, resulting in a delightful fusion of Middle Eastern inspiration and Indian flavors.

The popularity of the Dubai chocolate bar has also had an impact on the global pistachio market. As demand for the nutty filling surged, pistachio prices rose significantly, with some reports indicating a jump from $7.65 to $10.30 per pound within a year. The United States, the largest pistachio exporter, faced a lower-than-usual harvest last year, further straining the global supply and contributing to the price increase.

Despite the challenges in sourcing ingredients and recreating the authentic taste of the original Dubai chocolate bar, Indian chocolatiers have successfully captured the essence of the viral trend, offering consumers a taste of the Middle East with a local twist. The result is a range of unique and delicious chocolate bars that showcase the creativity and innovation of the Indian culinary scene.

The viral Dubai chocolate bar trend highlights the power of social media in shaping consumer preferences and driving demand for new and exciting food experiences. It also demonstrates the ability of local businesses to adapt to global trends and create unique products that cater to the tastes of their target market. As India continues to embrace international flavors and culinary influences, the "desi spin" on the Dubai chocolate bar is a testament to the country's vibrant and ever-evolving food culture.
