Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satyapal Malik is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) due to serious kidney-related health issues. In a recent social media post on X, the veteran politician shared a concerning health update, stating that his condition has become "very serious." Malik has been suffering from kidney problems for the past month and was admitted to a hospital in May 2025.
In his message, Malik provided a contact number for those seeking updates on his health and also addressed the chargesheet filed against him by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the Kiru Hydro Electric Project corruption case.
Malik has alleged that the government is attempting to frame him with false charges. He claimed that during his tenure as Governor, he was offered bribes of ₹150 crore but maintained his integrity. He stated that he himself had canceled the tender in which they are trying to implicate him, informing the Prime Minister about the corruption involved. According to Malik, after his transfer, the tender was approved with someone else's signature. He requested the government and its agencies to reveal the truth about their investigation to the people of the country.
Malik has been a vocal critic of the BJP government, particularly regarding the Pulwama attack and alleged corruption. He has claimed that the Modi government could repeat a Pulwama-like false flag operation to win elections. In an interview, he painted a negative picture of Prime Minister Modi and his advisors, alleging lapses by the Indian home ministry that led to the Pulwama attack in 2019. He has also asserted that the central government refused to provide aircraft to the CRPF personnel, which resulted in the jawans traveling by road and ultimately being attacked.
The CBI filed a chargesheet against Malik and several others concerning alleged corruption in the ₹2,200 crore Kiru hydropower project contract. The case involves alleged malpractices in awarding the contract for civil works of the project in Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar district in 2019. In February 2024, the CBI raided multiple locations, including premises linked to Malik, as part of the investigation, recovering digital devices, property documents, and cash.
Malik has often spoken out on matters of public integrity and national interest. Despite holding high positions throughout his political career, he claims to be living in a one-room house and is in debt. He stated that if he had money, he would have sought treatment in a private hospital. His deteriorating health and legal battles have drawn reactions from political and civil society leaders.
