A junior resident doctor at Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial (LLRM) Medical College in Meerut has been suspended following allegations of negligence that resulted in the death of a 30-year-old accident victim. The doctor allegedly failed to attend to the patient, Sunil Kumar, who bled to death after being left unattended for hours in the emergency ward.
The incident reportedly occurred on Monday when Kumar, who belonged to Hassanpur village, was admitted to the hospital around 1 a.m. after being hit by an unidentified vehicle near Sisauli on Sunday night. Kumar sustained a leg injury in the accident. According to the victim's family, they waited for a long time for the doctor on duty to wake up. They also pleaded with other medical staff for assistance, but their requests went unanswered. Kumar was left bleeding on a stretcher and eventually died.
A video purportedly showing the incident has been widely circulated. The video allegedly shows the doctor sleeping in front of an air conditioner with his leg resting on a nearby table while Kumar's family pleaded for medical attention. Dr. RC Gupta, the principal of LLRM Medical College, stated that after taking cognizance of the video, the concerned junior resident, Dr. Bhupesh Kumar Rai, was immediately suspended. A three-member committee has been formed to investigate the family's allegations. Dr. Gupta also noted that the widely circulated video showed the patient's family members pleading for treatment.
This is not the first instance of alleged negligence at LLRM Medical College. In 2023, three doctors were suspended, and a case was registered against them for allegedly assaulting a relative of a five-year-old boy who was crying due to pain after a fracture. In the same year, a video of a patient lying on the hospital floor also surfaced on social media.
