During a heated debate in Lok Sabha regarding Operation Sindoor, Union Home Minister Amit Shah strongly rebuked the opposition, questioning their stance on communication with Pakistan. Shah's remarks came amidst disruptions during External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's address on the same issue. He accused the opposition of prioritizing narratives from outside India over the statements of Indian ministers.
Operation Sindoor was launched in response to the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam. The 16-hour long discussion in Parliament has been marked by sharp exchanges and fierce political posturing, with national security, diplomacy, and internal political divides all taking center stage.
Shah’s criticism was sharp, suggesting the opposition had greater faith in foreign entities than in their own government. He stated that while the opposition's speakers were talking, the ruling party listened patiently and calmly. He further added that the opposition should maintain decorum. Shah's comments underscore the deep political divisions surrounding the issue of Pakistan and national security.
In response to the Pahalgam attack, India has taken a firm stance, which includes the execution of Operation Mahadev that neutralized three terrorists. Security forces were instructed not to allow terrorists responsible for the Pahalgam attack leave the country. The mastermind of the Pahalgam attack, Suleiman, was killed during Operation Mahadev. India has also taken diplomatic steps, such as downgrading Pakistan's diplomatic presence in the country.
Shah also criticized Congress leaders, including P. Chidambaram, for allegedly seeking proof of the terrorists' Pakistani origin and shielding Pakistan. He stated that all three terrorists were Pakistani and that India has their voter IDs.
The opposition has questioned the government about the "security lapse" at Pahalgam. Jaishankar clarified that the U.S. had no role in mediating the military ceasefire between India and Pakistan during Operation Sindoor.
The debate in Lok Sabha also saw accusations from Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury, who alluded to instances of government officials visiting Pakistan. She said that the opposition did not go to Pakistan to eat biryani.
