In the wake of escalating tensions and cross-border provocations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has adopted a firm stance, making it clear that India will respond decisively to any act of aggression. This resolute approach was underscored by a recent revelation concerning a phone call with U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance prior to India's robust response to terror provocations.
The conversation with Vice President Vance occurred on May 9, preceding India's military operation targeting terror sites in Pakistan. During the call, Vance cautioned Modi about a potential "big strike" from Pakistan. Modi, in turn, conveyed India's unwavering determination to retaliate with even greater force if such aggression were to occur. He referenced his earlier declaration following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, where he vowed to respond decisively, stating, "Goli ka jawab gole se diya jayega" (Bullets will be answered with cannonballs). Modi has instructed the armed forces to be more forceful and that bullets must be responded to by artillery.
Prime Minister Modi also spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday, providing a comprehensive briefing on Operation Sindoor, India's recent military operation targeting terror sites in Pakistan. Modi informed Trump that India launched precision strikes on May 6–7 and May 9–10 in response to continued terror provocations from Pakistan. These operations resulted in heavy damage to Pakistan's military infrastructure, including rendering multiple airbases inoperable. Modi told Trump that India's response to terrorism would no longer be limited to symbolic retaliation and that terrorism will no longer be treated as a proxy war, but as an act of war.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri emphasized India's firm position against third-party mediation, particularly in matters involving Pakistan. He clarified that discussions regarding trade were not connected to Operation Sindoor and that the decision to pause the operation was made bilaterally through existing communication channels with Pakistan. Modi firmly reiterated India's long-standing position on sovereignty and its refusal to allow external interference in Indo-Pak affairs.
Furthermore, Modi asserted that no world leader had instructed India to halt its actions, emphasizing the global support for India's fight against terrorism. He lamented the lack of support from the Congress party for the bravery of Indian forces. Modi also highlighted the success of Operation Sindoor in demolishing terror epicenters and neutralizing terrorists and terror hubs. He emphasized that India had clearly communicated its objectives to Pakistan and that its actions were non-escalatory, targeting only terrorists and those sheltering them.
In light of Pakistan's continued provocations, Prime Minister Modi's government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards cross-border terrorism. The message is clear: any act of aggression against India will be met with a forceful and decisive response. This firm stance reflects India's commitment to protecting its sovereignty and ensuring the safety and security of its citizens.
