Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, during a debate regarding the Pahalgam terror attack and the subsequent military response, Operation Sindoor. He refuted claims that any world leader had pressured India to halt the counter-terror operation. Modi asserted that Pakistan pleaded for a ceasefire after suffering significant losses. He emphasized that India's response was strong, measured, and within its rights to self-defense.
Modi stated that India received support from nearly every country worldwide, with only a few exceptions. He said that India had maintained from the beginning that its actions were non-escalatory. Modi directly addressed claims of external pressure, stating, "No leader in the world asked us to stop Operation Sindoor".
Recounting the events leading up to Operation Sindoor, Modi revealed that on May 9, 2025, the US Vice President, JD Vance, attempted to contact him multiple times while he was in a meeting with the armed forces. Upon returning the call, Vance informed Modi of Pakistan's plan for a major attack. Modi responded that Pakistan would pay a heavy price for such actions, stating, "If Pakistan attacks, we will respond with a big attack. I said 'hum goli ka jawab gole se denge'".
Modi highlighted India's decisive response, stating, "On May 10, we destroyed Pakistan's military strength". He affirmed that Pakistan now understands that India's responses will be stronger than previous ones and that India can go to any extent if a similar situation arises again. Modi also stated that Operation Sindoor is still ongoing.
Modi recounted Pakistan's plea to halt the operation, with Pakistani officials reportedly saying they could not withstand further attacks. He also mentioned that Pakistan began issuing nuclear threats after the Pahalgam attack on April 22, 2025. Modi declared that India had demonstrated that it would not bow down to nuclear blackmail.
The Prime Minister also shared that Pakistan launched approximately 1,000 missiles and armed drones on May 9, but the Indian air defense system successfully intercepted them. He said that India’s air defense system is being discussed around the world.
Modi also addressed the decision to contact Pakistan shortly after launching Operation Sindoor. He explained that India informed Pakistan of its objectives immediately after achieving them. Modi criticized the Congress party for questioning the military's actions and undermining the morale of the armed forces. He also blamed Congress for the loss of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
Home Minister Amit Shah stated that nine terror sites within Pakistan were destroyed during Operation Sindoor, and over 100 terrorists were neutralized. Shah emphasized the government's zero-tolerance policy against terrorism. He noted that Pakistan's DGMO contacted India's DGMO on May 10, leading to a ceasefire announcement.
