In the midst of swirling speculation regarding a potential change in leadership in Karnataka, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has firmly stated that there is no need for concern. This declaration comes amidst claims from some within the Congress party that a majority of legislators are in favor of replacing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
The rumors of a power shift gained traction after Cooperation Minister KN Rajanna hinted at "revolutionary" political developments in Karnataka following September. This sparked renewed discussions about a possible change in the Chief Minister's position, with some suggesting that Shivakumar, who also serves as the state Congress president, might take over. Fueling the fire, Congress MLA Iqbal Hussain, a known Shivakumar loyalist, claimed that over 100 MLAs support a change in leadership, believing Shivakumar's leadership is essential for the party to retain power in the 2028 assembly polls. Hussain credited Shivakumar for the party's strong performance in the 2023 elections, citing his efforts as Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) chief.
However, these claims have been met with resistance from within the party. Sources close to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah have dismissed the possibility of a change, with some asserting that Siddaramaiah will complete his full five-year term. Siddaramaiah himself has downplayed the significance of recent political developments, stating that discussions and assessments are routine matters for strengthening the party. Amidst the conflicting reports, the Congress high command has reiterated that the final decision regarding any leadership change rests with them.
Adding to the complexity, there have been reports of a potential power-sharing agreement between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, with Shivakumar potentially taking over as Chief Minister after two and a half years. While Shivakumar's loyalists have made multiple references to this alleged deal, the Siddaramaiah camp has denied its existence. The continued speculation prompted the Congress central leadership to intervene, dispatching AICC general secretary Randeep Surjewala to assess the situation. Surjewala is meeting with MLAs and other leaders to understand their concerns and demands, focusing on both governance and political matters. However, Surjewala has downplayed the rumors of a leadership change, dismissing them as "figments of imagination".
The current situation highlights the internal dynamics within the Karnataka Congress, with factions supporting both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar. Shivakumar has the backing of the influential Vokkaliga community, which helped propel the Congress to power in 2023. Siddaramaiah, on the other hand, enjoys support from minorities, marginalized communities, and a majority of Congress MLAs. He is also a two-time Chief Minister.
The Congress party is currently in a "wait-and-watch" mode, with no immediate plans to replace Siddaramaiah. However, a cabinet reshuffle and changes in the party's state leadership structure remain possibilities. The coming weeks are likely to be crucial as the Congress high command evaluates the situation and makes decisions aimed at maintaining stability and unity within the party. The focus remains on ensuring effective governance and addressing the concerns of all stakeholders as the party navigates these internal challenges.
