The World Championship of Legends (WCL) semi-final between India and Pakistan has been embroiled in controversy, leading to EaseMyTrip, a prominent Indian travel-tech company and official sponsor of the tournament, pulling out of the match. The decision highlights the ongoing sensitivity surrounding sporting events between the two nations, with "terror and cricket" seemingly unable to coexist.
EaseMyTrip's co-founder, Nishant Pitti, made the announcement via social media, stating that the company would not support any event that attempts to normalize relations with a country that "promotes terrorism". He emphasized that "some things are bigger than sport" and that the nation comes first, followed by business. This stance reflects a strong sentiment among some in India, where there is resistance to engaging with Pakistan on any platform while cross-border tensions remain.
The company had previously clarified its position in an official statement, emphasizing that despite a five-year sponsorship agreement with the WCL, EaseMyTrip would not be associated with any match involving Pakistan. The travel platform has consistently maintained this stance, communicating it clearly to the WCL team from the beginning. EaseMyTrip has reiterated its unwavering support for Team India and its desire to see them win the cup.
Following EaseMyTrip's decision, the WCL organizers officially cancelled the India-Pakistan match, which was originally scheduled for July 20 in Edgbaston, Birmingham. The league issued a statement expressing regret for the emotional distress the fixture may have caused. The WCL explained that the match was initially proposed to create joyful memories, inspired by recent sporting encounters between India and Pakistan in volleyball and hockey. However, the idea reportedly evoked discomfort among Indian players and fans. The WCL acknowledged that they may have "ended up hurting the feelings of many and stirring emotions" and apologized for hurting sentiments.
Several Indian players, including Shikhar Dhawan and Suresh Raina, had also reportedly refused to play against Pakistan, citing national sentiment. Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina also showed their support by reposting EaseMyTrip's message.
The WCL is a tournament featuring retired and non-contracted players from major cricketing nations, including England, India, Pakistan, Australia, West Indies, and South Africa. Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn and musician Harshit Tomar own the WCL. This year's tournament is being held in four UK cities: Birmingham, Northampton, Leeds, and Leicester. The now-cancelled India vs Pakistan match had tickets available starting from £24. India won the inaugural league last year, defeating Pakistan in the final.
