Saurabh Garg, a 1991 batch IAS officer, has been granted a one-year extension as Secretary of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI). The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the extension on a contract basis, allowing Garg to continue in the role until July 31, 2026. He will also continue to serve as Secretary to the National Statistical Commission.

MoSPI plays a crucial role in the Indian government by gathering, analyzing, and disseminating statistical data that informs policymaking and decision-making. As Secretary, Garg is responsible for ensuring the ministry's continued efficiency and effectiveness.

The extension of Garg's tenure reflects the government's emphasis on maintaining experienced leadership in key government institutions. The decision ensures continuity in the ministry's operations and allows Garg to continue his work in strengthening India's statistical foundation.
