England Tour Commences Without Kohli and Sharma: Indian Players Largely Overlooked by Fans, According to Reports

The Indian cricket team's arrival in England for the five-match Test series has been met with a noticeably subdued reception, signaling a significant shift as the team embarks on a new era without its long-standing stalwarts, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Reports indicate a stark contrast to previous tours, with fewer fans and media personnel present at the airport to welcome the squad led by the new captain, Shubman Gill.

This series marks the beginning of the 2025-2027 ICC World Test Championship cycle and is the first time since 2011 that an Indian Test team has toured England without either Kohli or Sharma. Both senior players recently retired from the traditional format, leaving a void in the team and a palpable absence of the hype and excitement that typically surrounds the Indian cricket team.

Several sources have noted the lack of fanfare upon the team's arrival. According to a video shared by journalist Vimal Kumar, the usual enthusiastic crowds were missing. This sentiment was echoed across social media, where fans expressed disappointment, with some fearing a decline in the aura of Test cricket due to the absence of Kohli and Rohit. However, some fans remained optimistic, hoping that the new team, under Gill's leadership, would reignite the excitement.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared a behind-the-scenes video on social media, capturing the team's journey and arrival at Heathrow Airport. The footage showed a relaxed and focused squad, with banter between players. Jasprit Bumrah was heard playfully teasing Shubman Gill, adding a touch of levity to the start of the tour. Sai Sudharsan, who received his first Test call-up, expressed his excitement about being part of the team.

Shubman Gill acknowledged the challenges of playing without Kohli and Rohit. Before departing for London, Gill addressed the media in Mumbai, stating that while their experience would be missed, the team has a lot of collective experience and is prepared to handle the pressure. He emphasized the team's strong batting and bowling combination and expressed confidence in their ability to perform well.

The absence of Kohli and Rohit has inevitably raised questions about who will fill their crucial roles in the batting order. With Gill at the helm, the team management will need to make strategic decisions about the batting lineup. Karun Nair, making a comeback to the Test side after seven years, is a potential candidate for the number four spot. Gill himself is also a contender, having previously batted at number three.

The Test series will be held at iconic venues, including Headingley in Leeds, Edgbaston in Birmingham, Lord's and The Oval in London, and Old Trafford in Manchester. The series will be a significant test for Gill, who is taking on the captaincy role for the first time with the national side. Experienced players like Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, and KL Rahul will be crucial in supporting the new captain and guiding the team.

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting believes that India has the talent to manage the transition effectively. He highlighted the emergence of young players like Yashasvi Jaiswal and the experience of senior players. Ponting acknowledged that while replacing the skill of Kohli and Rohit is manageable, their experience will be greatly missed.

As India embarks on this new chapter, the team's performance in the Test series will be closely watched. The series presents an opportunity for new faces to step up and establish themselves in the Test arena. While the absence of Kohli and Rohit is keenly felt, the team is focused on the challenges ahead and determined to make a mark in the 2025-2027 World Test Championship cycle.
