Maganti Gopinath, the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) MLA representing the Jubilee Hills constituency in Hyderabad, passed away on June 8, 2025, at the age of 63. He died at 5:45 am at AIG Hospital in Gachibowli, Hyderabad, after suffering a heart attack on June 5, 2025, and being treated in the ICU. He had been battling kidney-related ailments for some time and had undergone surgery a few months prior. He is survived by his wife Sunitha, his son Maganti Vatyalyanadh, and two daughters, Akshara Naga and Dishira.
Born on June 2, 1963, in Hyderguda, Hyderabad, to Krishnamurthy and Mahananda Kumari, Maganti Gopinath's political journey spanned over four decades. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Osmania University. Gopinath began his political career in 1983 with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), inspired by N.T. Rama Rao. From 1985 to 1992, he served as the president of Telugu Yuvatha, the youth wing of the TDP, playing a significant role in youth politics. He also served as Director of the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (HUDA) from 1987 to 1989 and was a member of the District Consumer Forum from 1988 to 1993.
Gopinath's electoral breakthrough came in 2014 when he won the Telangana Assembly election from Jubilee Hills on a TDP ticket, defeating MIM's Naveen Yadav. He later joined the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), which is now the BRS. In 2018, he won again from Jubilee Hills, representing TRS, defeating Congress candidate P. Vishnuvardhan Reddy. He served on the Public Estimates Committee (PEC) in the Legislative Assembly that same year. He secured a third term in the 2023 elections, defeating Congress candidate and former Indian cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin. He was also appointed as the Hyderabad district president of the BRS Party on January 26, 2022.
Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy expressed his shock and offered condolences. BRS chief K. Chandrashekhar Rao mourned the loss, acknowledging Gopinath's reputation as an approachable leader. BRS Working President K.T. Rama Rao cancelled his scheduled tour to Nalgonda district to be with the family. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu also expressed grief, recalling Gopinath's early political journey with the TDP. Nara Lokesh and Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy also expressed their condolences.
Maganti Gopinath's passing marks the end of a career defined by public service and dedication to the people of Jubilee Hills. He was known for his humble and approachable nature, earning respect across the political spectrum. His contributions to the development of Jubilee Hills and his commitment to the BRS party will be remembered.
